I am my mom’s tech support for her computer. She uses her computer primarily to play games (offline) and email. She has dial-up. There are few if any issues. As of late though, she has been having email issues where the dial-up times out before all the huge email messages can be downloaded into the Outlook Express client. So she will call me and I’ll access her email by the web client and review and possibly delete the big emails (usually forwards) so she can read all the other email. Via friends and family mom gets more forwards of crap than I have ever seen. Mostly silly chain letters and things of that nature – spam. Lately I have been seeing some emails (from 2 different offenders primarily) that are kind of troubling. They trouble me because they are spreading misinformation about religion, political candidates and other nonsense. It’s bad news because if you are my mom, you take this garbage at face value. Her latest thing is she’s been telling me that Barack Obama is a Muslim and his candidacy is some big terror plot, and that Hillary is participating in shady dealings again a la Whitewater. People are free to their opinions about anything as far as I’m concerned but there is a group of boomers and retirees out there getting this nonsense via email and taking it at face-value. Here is the latest gem I deleted out yesterday (Warning: It’s long and my post picks up the HTML formatting from the email at the end and I got sick of trying to edit it out…)I also edited it down a bit and cleaned up all the garbage that gets embedded when things get forwarded…I did leave all the crazy formatting so you could see how emphatic the author of this email is:

her daily radio program will offer a year-long course on the New Age Christ ,
in a lesson a day and completely cover the 365 lessons from the Course in
Miracles ‘Workbook.’ Those who finish the Course will have a wholly
redefined spiritual mindset – a New Age world view that include the beliefs
that there is no sin, no evil, no devil. A Course in Miracles teaches its
students to rethink everything they believe about God and life, and,
bluntly states: ‘This is a course in mind training’ and is dedicated to ‘thought
reversal.’
The Course in Miracles – in reality – is the truth
of the Bible turned upside down.
Oprah told her television audience that
Williamson’s book, A Course in Miracles was one of her favorite books, and
that she had already bought a thousand copies and would be handing them
out to everyone in her studio audience. Oprah’s endorsement skyrocketed
Williamson’s book to the top of the New York Times bestseller list A Course in Miracles is allegedly a ‘new revelation’ from ‘Jesus’ to help humanity work through these troubled times. This ‘Jesus’-who bears no doctrinal resemblance to the Bible’s Jesus
Christ-began delivering channeled teachings in 1965 to a Columbia
University Professor of Medical Psychology, Helen Schucman. One day Schucman heard an ‘inner voice’ stating,
‘This is a course in miracles. Please take notes.’ For seven years she
diligently took spiritual dictation from this voice that described himself
as ‘Jesus.’

Christians! Take heed! Whatever this thing is Oprah has going on is being taken out of context. I Googled it and basically something based on the book “A Course in Miracles” is being done on Oprah’s XM show. What it boils down to is the Fundies are all worked up because the book suggests a kinder, more gentle form of religion in general and talks about a non-penalty based form of Christianity. It also showed up on a couple of urban legend sites because the email being routed is not accurate. My complaint is what my mom intuits from this lengthy email is Oprah and Barack Obama are both heretic devils, among other things.

It is actually all factual, and can all be verified by reading the Bible – not necessarily all 66 books of it – but you can use an on-line bible (there are many) and do searches in them.
Indeed, from what I’ve read on this topic through googling, while the emails sound alarmist, they are factually accurate in their warnings.
Now, if you believe in the Bible (I do), then, yes, the relationship between Oprah and her co-operating partner in the Miracles series with a dumbing-down of what scripture actually says should be a source of concern.
If you don’t believe in what the Bible says, then just move on – because it won’t convince you one way or the other, will it?
Just for your information, where the Bible says there will be the Anti-Christ who will rule shortly before the Second Coming, Islam teaches that their final prophet, known as Al-Mahdi will rule. Interesting comparison.
But as I say, if you don’t believe the Bible, that’s cool. Nobody on the Christian front will force you to do so, because force is not God’s plan. But holiness certainly is.
