Update on April 10, 2009 – I posted another blog entry in response to the numerous hater comments I receive on this blog post but it does not show up in the search engines the way this one does. So for anyone feeling the need to comment, I welcome it but either before or after please read the following post so instead of hurling insults at me you’ll understand why I feel the way I feel, and why I wrote what I did:
I’ve read about and seen documentaries covering the aggressive and sometimes unethical military recruiting tactics being used on today’s young people especially given dropping enlistment rates. So I knew it was going on, but I didn’t realize just how insidious the process really was until I witnessed it with my own eyes in the SuperTarget parking lot today. I could barely tear myself away, mesmerized by the two very charismatic and upbeat Marines, all gussied up in their dress blues. I noticed this all going down as I was leaving Target. The 2 recruiters, 1 Caucasian and 1 Hispanic, had stopped 2 teenagers in the Target parking lot. This was a curious scene because I was in Fishers – why would the military be recruiting in a location in Indianapolis where there aren’t a surplus of low-income minorities? Both teenagers were wearing red and shepherding a line of carts into Target so presumably they were Target employees and on the clock. As an aside I wonder if Target is aware that military recruiters are standing outside on Target property talking to their on-the-clock employees for lengthy periods of time. Anyway, the 4 guys looked like they were having a grand old time slapping each other on the backs and laughing. So I stopped to listen. I could not hear everything but I was hearing numbers. The military will make you rich! $1500 a month! $2000 for every friend you bring to a recruiter who enlists! Extra hazard pay! On and on and on. Those numbers are going to sound mighty enticing to two teenagers (1 white, 1 black) standing there making minimum wage to push carts into Target in 30-degree weather. I hear the recruiter ask their ages and about school – one is still in high school (this I could not sort out – are schools already out for break??? Inservice day?). Anyway, go ahead and enlist now! There is a deferred program so you enlist now, get some cash and start after school! What a great deal! Then you serve your time, make money and go to college! What they neglected to mention is the college thing could be a problem if you happen to get killed or maimed in a war zone, or if you are one of the actives who is stuck on the never-ending merry-go-round of getting sent back and back after promises of tours of duty being over. Not a problem if you want to go to college when you are 45. I hear jokes about women liking men in uniforms. I hear talk of skating through your remaining years of high school because you are guaranteed a job in the military. Then the recruiters were talking about everything they had seen. And I don’t mean bloody war zone scenes I mean glamorous world travel stories. Hell I’m a bleeding-heart, peace-mongering liberal and I was about ready to walk up there and ask how do I join. Finally, one of the recruiters looked over at me suspiciously (they could probably sense my distaste) so I decided to get in my car. But I waited. Waited to see how this would end. After another 10 minutes, the Target teens went inside with their carts. The recruiters walked over to a vehicle with government plates, got inside but did not drive off. Clearly they were waiting for more potential victims. After witnessing this I did some quick research and didn’t like what I saw. I realize enlistment is at an all-time low, but these recruiters are misleading impressionable teens. Perhaps the most troubling thing I read is about the increase in Hispanic recruitment (which explains the Caucasian/Hispanic duo of recruiters I saw), promises of getting citizenship if you enlist and stats on how many illegal immigrants have been killed in Iraq. Which begs the question of what are illegal immigrants doing in Iraq (as American soldiers) to begin with? Surely the military knows who has citizenship status and who does not. The question is do they care. Sure! We don’t want you here unless you go fight our war for us. Then we roll out the welcome mat for you! I’m not being unsupportive of military folks. My brother spent the majority of his life in the Air Force (and came out basically institutionalized, unable to cope at first without the structure of the military – he had to be taught at the age of 45 how to live). But recruiters are preying on minority, low-income kids where sure the military will look like a better option than whatever else they have in front of them. They are misleading them about how great the military life is and what all it can do for you. They aren’t talking about risk of death or dismemberment. They aren’t talking about wounded vets getting subpar care in the U.S. because of funding cuts. They don’t talk about how they have to brainwash recruits to make them “military material”. They aren’t talking about the permanent mental and emotional damage that is caused by spending months in war zones and witnessing horrid things. And they sure as hell aren’t talking about being stuck in war zones long after a tour of duty should be over. I fear for our country and world for many reasons. What I fear after today is what this country will be like in 10, 20 and 30 years when the Iraq war vets who are basically just children now are trying to piece their lives back together after seeing what they have had to see. My brother was in Saudi Arabia for 18 months during the first Gulf War and I’ve watched him struggle to lead a normal life for the last several years since retiring from the military.

Creepy! I can just picture Bush sitting in his office issuing orders, “go recruit soldiers where the poor kids work.”
What you describe is pretty much standard military recruiting practice for the past 150 year or so. In the Civil War you could pay to avoid the draft or send someone else (typically someone from a poorer family) to fill your uniform. The stories of Vietnam being fought by undereducated teenagers are pretty well known. I’m not at all shocked.
I remember military recruiting was big at my high school. Keep in mind almost all the kids were from blue collar families and only 25% went on to any schooling after graduation. You had to convince your counselor that you had a good reason why you needed to take the SAT, but by god they rounded us all up to take the ASVAB our junior year.
By your senior year, the recruiters were bugging all of us. They’d call your house and occasionally just show up at your door to talk (it was pretty common in my neighborhood as there were about a dozen 16-18 year old dudes living in a two block area). I heard that if you went and heard them out and gave your reasons why you weren’t joining, they’d leave you alone. So I met a recruiter for lunch.
We met at Richard’s Restaurant. He tried every angle:
“I’m going to college.”
“How are you planning to pay for college.”
“I have a full ride scholarship.”
“You can sign up now, make $XXXX, and not only have your college paid for, but have money for living expenses.”
“I actually got offers to attend a military academy but I turned them down. I guess I could have been your C.O.”
Before the conversation was over, he told me about how his brother had served in Vietnam, but he was too young to go and he regretted that. At that point I realized I was talking to a crazy person and left. I will say I never heard from another recruiter, so mission accomplished I suppose.
In defense of the military, though – I hate to say it but often times the best option for a lot of the lower income kids they do target is the military. Despite current issues, a military is necessary. A lot of those kids I went to HS with who did enlist probably wound up a lot better off because of their time in the military.
Chilling. I would have been tempted to go inside, hunt those kids down, and present them with the other side of the coin. In fact, if you want to go at lunch, I’ll come with you.
If Eric ever expressed any interest in military life, I think I would cut off one of his toes.
Scott – Or saying “yeah go ahead and let the illegal aliens go fight in Iraq – then we don’t have to count them in American death tolls.” Geez.
Steve – I don’t disagree with your point on the military being a good option for some people – I have an uncle and cousin who made some nice money as career navy guys – but, and it’s a big but, they both are engineers so they are not on the front lines. The bone I’m picking is the way in which these kids are getting recruited. It’s dishonest and manipulative. The military is being painted as some kind of rosy deal when it’s not whether you spend time in war zones or not.
Melody – Not a bad idea. I’m going to a peaceful protest of puppy mill pet stores this weekend – perhaps we should peacfully protest recruiters as well. At a minimum, I am going to call Super Target and alert them to what’s going on.
Another total load of canned prewritten propaganda from the Paulie Bush haters.

My guess is the catskillcommentator is the product of too much AM radio and Fox News and can’t be held accountable for their opinion since they’re simply echoing a load of crap someone else hoisted on them.
Seriously – neocons got nothing to do on Christmas day than troll blogs? I mean I know most of you lead miserable existances looking for enemies at every turn or shivering that Hillary or Barack will be president as of 2009, but I figured y’all took a day off on Christmas at least. Geez…

I know my post is outdated but I hope you will read it anyway. I am a fairly educated person. This is in response to you “Melody”.
Within the next 3 months I will obtain my goal of a BFA in studio art. After this I have plans and am currently pursuing joining the Marine Corp. I could easily live a comfortable life without ever having anything to do with the government, but I have a different goal in life. My parents do not support me through this due to their own personal political opinions. It is a shame but in this I am alone. Anyway you should read this:
http://www.wtv-zone.com/Mary/AMARINESLASTLETTER.HTML
Shame on you. The men and women who serve our country are never acknowledged by the good they do only the wrongs. You are the people who cant see past the bad for the good, you are the people who this Marine died for.
Thanks for your post Austin – I’m not one of those bloggers who deletes comments that don’t line up with my own opinions but I do have a response.
Shame on Melody? Or me? Not appropriate if you really read my post orher comment. Nothing about my post or Melody’s comment in *any way* disrespects those enlisted and in active duty. I don’t believe in the Iraq war – those soldiers are not over there fighting and dying for me or my freedom – they are in Iraq because the very cavalier and dishonest President of the US and a majority of elected officials pushed us into an unnecessary war over money and greed and power – not freedom. But I don’t hold the soldiers responsible for that – they are just doing as they are told. The blood of all the deceased soldiers and Iraqi people is on George Bush’s hands (and his merry band of idiots who supported this).
We are speaking out against the manipulative tactics the miliary uses to recruit young people who really aren’t old enough to make good decisions and get lured in to the miliary by promises of riches when they truly don’t know what they are getting in to.
Austin – my brother luckily survived his time in war zones – but he is not the same. His life was forever changed for the worse. You don’t see what he saw and come back the same person.
So no – not shame on Melody for trying to keep Eric safe because those responsible at a higher level aren’t looking out for him – they are just trying to enlist bodies to send into war.
I wish you luck in your endeavors.
So, suppose all of you’re gripes are heard here and these so called dodgie methods of recruiting are changed, and the already plumeting quota for enlistment to our nations military is at an all time low. Where would America’s front line of defense be? The same line of defense that gives most whack job liberals and ignorant weak-hearted, band wagon patriots, like most of you on this page the right to think you have a voice. You want a voice ladies and gentleman, grow a pair and enlist in our nations armed forces… then you can bitch and complain all you want to. At least then you can say you put something into this rapidly growing meting pot that America is turning into.
So you are saying that unless someone is in the military they having nothing to contibute to America? That’s a completely illogical argument and like every other person posting here disagreeing with me you are going on a rant about liberals – not really focusing on what’s been written. People should join the military because they want to – not because they are tricked into it. The strength of the US military is not just the people – it’s the technology that enables defense without putting lives in jeapardy.
Katie,
A nations military exists to protect that nation. Agree? I am saying that every citezen of that host nation they so “proudly” are a member of should put they’re time in, not because the want to but because it is a civic duty as a patriot of that country. If this were the case then the armed forces wouldn’t have to spend so many additional man hours on slick propoganda and shifty recruiting tools, such as beefing up the positive points of enlistment or commisioning. I have been in the military for 7 years. I have deployed and fought twice in Iraq. I was born and raised in America and enlisted after 9/11… There are many just like me, where is America’s loyalty? I am not saying the only way to contribute to America is to be in the military, however to me, I know i can look back on my life, and the lives of many other service members and say that those patriots were the cream of the crop and no other contribution could be more worthy than serving in our nations armed forces.
Jay who just posted – I rarely delete comments but I just deleted your comment because it was very rude and offensive. As is the case with most who post negative comments here, you fail to see the point of the post.
Melody i hope eric chooses to enlist… part of his choice will make you see that your children are individuals with their own choices. Coddling your kids and trying to make them you, or live to please you will only lead to miserable children who will dispise you. “cut his toe off”???? that is the worst thing ive heard a mother say (tounge in cheek or not) about her kid to promote her politics.
Im joining the marines and noone “tricked” me into it. Make sure your kids do their homework when considering an enlistment… then, be the proudest parent ever. Go along for the interviews do what ever it takes to make sure they arent being lied to, but for crying out loud this is your child not you.
This post sure brings the nutjobs out of the woodwork – thanks for your 2 cents Nick! To bad like every other crazy right-winger commenting here you miss the point of the post and comments.
enlighten me! Name calling? What are you six?
The beauty of a blog – it’s mine and whether I’m 6 or 36 I can write what I want – it’s an added bonus on top when I irritate people like you Nick.
Thats the beauity of a blog… you can spew out garbage and defend it with dismissal and name calling. You are pathetic.
Have fun deleting my posts.
“It’s an added bonus on top when I irritate people like you Nick.”
Nick is right. If you incite an argument, please have the facts to back it up so that we dont have to wade through childish name calling.
And to everyone who insults biased information sources and those who follow them, what makes your sources any more reliable? Failure to understand that there are actually two sides to an issue is immature.
Im a 17 year old High School student who plans to join the US Marine Corps after going through the NROTC program, before I ever talked to a recruiter, I did my own research. Both of my parents are die-hard liberals. We do not watch T.V. at all in my household. I have never owned a video game system.
I realize this discussion is dead. I just had to rant. God bless America
Yeah…manipulative tactics.
Look, nobody forces you to sign your name on anything, and if you’re dumb enough to sign up and think you aren’t going to war right now, well…
It’s easy for you to sit on a blog and talk about these recruiters. Recruiters work 6 days a week, often 10+ hour days. And they have to deal with people like you who despise them for doing their job.
Fact is, you do get paid alright, get a college education, and you can travel. All this is is a bunch of people who have never been in the military pretending to be experts on the military.
By the way, your comment about targeting low-income minorities is absurd and idiotic.
I come from a family making 300,000+ a year, in the suburbs. I am leaving college for the Marines. Good try though. You know NOTHING.

More leftly slanders of the Military? real original. pussys.
I’m a little confused… why is it an issue that the marines are making the service more appealing than working at a target in 30 degree weather? (Which it probably is.) Isn’t this what every organization does? ANd aren’t these kids smart enough to know that the Marines, or any army branch, carries danger with it?
This is the typical excuse and the reason why the economy is in such dire shape. No personal accountability. People do not educate themselves and walk mindlessly into situations thinking that the Salesmen, Banker, or Recruiter is going to be 100% forth-comming. Arm yourself with information. My god, we have the internet right at our fingers. If you can’t afford the internet, just walk into a Boarders and read about it. If you can’t afford internent and you can’t read, maybe the Marines is the right place for you!
This excuse about “not knowing” is SO old and overplayed and used to cover up the fact that you were lazy and stupid for not looking into these things on your own.
Pushing carts in a Target sucks. And all you can do is work your way up to being a manager and screwing your employees to meet the minimum monthly increase in Revenue. The military is a great place. Gi Bill, free health care for you and fam, life insurance, a place to live, food to eat, travel, extra pay, etc. Lets see Target do that.
Arm yourself with information and make a decision. Don’t balme the car salesman for making you buy a 50K truck you cant afford. Don’t blame the Banker and real-estate person for making you buy a 500K home that is worthless now, and don’t blame the recruiter for sugar-coating military service in times of War. You are the master of your destiny…. don’t be stupid.
Quit being a bitch. The USMC gives you the right to talk shit on the internet. Why are you getting into other peoples biz anyway… Semper FI bitch
Lance Corporal – I consider the comment you just left harassment – seeing as how you called me “bitch” twice. Your IP address has been logged.
It keeps going, and going, and going, and go….
I’ve known a few USMC in my life, and none would ever directly address a lady as a ‘bitch’ in real life or virtually. My guess is Lance Corporal is not nor will he ever be USMC. Weak and false.
I figured – I could not imagine a Marine saying Semper Fi bitch. I do find it entertaining that after 12 months, this blog post is stil riling people up.
Im enlisted in the Marine Corps, and i will definitly say that the recruiters do sugar coat everything, and leave out all the bad, but i knew exactly what i was doing when i signed the papers.
David said it best though, “you are the master of your own destiny.” and ya, anyone who signes up for the military, especially Marines, and thinks there isn’t a risk involved is flat out stupid and should never join the military.
you guy are all (with exception of a few) disrespecting the U.S. Military, and every enlisted man or women in it.
without our military you would not have the right to post this blog. and ya, i bet those 2 marine recruiters went over and told those two kids at target that they could be having a much better life in the Marines, because its true. you think theres a great risk of dying in Iraq if someone joines? well heres a funny statistic for you; MORE MARINES HAVE DIED IN MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS SINCE 2003 THAN IN IRAQ.
and my cousin just reenlisted after his first four years. he was based in Japan, then San Diego, did 2 tours in Iraq, and is now an embassy guard in South Africa… he comes from a family that literally makes milions of dollars a year, and wouln’t trade anything for his title as a Marine. He has a wife and 2 kids, all have full health benifits, housing, free or discounted travel, and have done things that you only dream of. my uncle spent 8 years in the Marines as Infantry and then Intel, and now is very high up in the FBI. he got his masters degree in criminal psycology while he was active duty Marine.
hope you realize how much offense is taken from this blog, but i guess you should practice your right of being able to post it before you convince nobody to join and we get everything taken away.
also, lance corporal if your a marine, shame on you, but i highly doubt you are, so have fun siting on your couch playing video games and wishing you did something with your life.
I agree with Brad and the other guy but I see Katie’s point. Thing is when you go into the military you know you might have to defend yourself and others around you with all you possess. War is War. Kids and Women have been slaughtered in all wars but I do disagree with Iraq. Iraq was a mistake we know the motives behind it and Corrupt bush who has sent many good men and women to their deaths but I think we have partially liberated a people, maybe more would have died before that country was given a chance, who knows. We should have focused everything against Al Queda back in their home. After 9/11 our country was together and every nation was behind us in the war against al queda and the invasion of a nation they used to house their soldiers. If we had stayed in afghanistan(how ever u spell it) we could have probably had a mass murderer in a nice little cell somewhere getting his punishment. But our country is run by a guy who tried cocaine and got hooked on it and ran many businesses into the ground before being our president. I give thanks to all those who joined for whatever reason they do have a job. With Russia talking their crap and all the other guys I’d hate for something to happen and the USMC to be undermanned because of pansies. I’m a liberal but guess what I know when a gun needs to be shot but I think I’d know where to aim it. My ex gf’s uncle was in the Marines a Sgt and is now a recruiter. He says he just makes sure with everything he has to say that each recruit knows there going to be a soldier and we should all know that definition. I myself am trying to get to the US Naval Academy and became a Marine Officer. I’ve done my research I know what I’m getting into.
I disagree with all of this anti-recruiting stuff. I joined the Marines in 2003 of September 9th. I have seen the world, got to go to Korea, Japan, and Australia. Then I finally came back to the states in 2007 where I did deploy to Iraq finally. Do you know what I did on deployment? Watched movies all day, barbecued every night and smoked cigars. There are jobs in the military where you do not have to come into contact with the enemy. I work on radio’s for the ATC community out here so when things aren’t broken I don’t work except to wait around for them to break. You guys act like the recruiters are complete liars, but they aren’t. When I was done with high school what was I going to do? Go to school? I’m not the brightest… Work? Doing what? bagging your guy’s groceries? No thanks. In fact, a buddy of mine that I graduated with has been working at a grocery store doing the exact same job for 5 years, cashier! I could not stand doing that… SO I joined the Marines and am expecting to get out here in November after 6 years of faithful service to my country, and go to school, just like they promised me.
Just like Saul I too was in the Marines so here are my two cents. I am a very bright person but was not ready for college after graduating high school. I walked into the recruiting office and asked for information, sure the recruiters were pushy but you have to understand, these men and women who are career minded are graded on how many recruits they bring in each month. If they receive horrible reviews then they can kiss any chance of receiving a promotion in the near future goodbye. I would have to say though that while I was in the Marines I was payed a decent wage, the medical and dental benefits were fantastic and yes I did get to travel all around the world. So while these recruiters might have been a little enthusiastic, which is part of the job, I don’t believe they were lying. I enlisted before 9/11 but let me make one thing clear I had no illusion that my life would not be placed in danger. I left the Marines after 6 years of honorable service I went to college received my B.A. and am now working towards an MBA. I cherish the time I spent in the Marines and all of the people I was able to meet, and there is not a day that goes by that some part of me wishes I had stayed in.
Crazy Right Winger
Steve
I love the Corps and , the writer speaks like a true P.O.G. but any way when did it ever become a bad thing you lay down your life in service for your country. I dont care you are , the only thing that is promised in life is death and we do a good job at it. so if you nasty people want to talk about them men and women that lay there life down for there country then there is a problem. I think if you dont serve you dont deserve to have an say, but then again this is america that we all love. Freedom isnt free
This is a close minded and biased way of looking at things. Noone is forced into joining its purely voluntary. The two guys mentioned are doing there job, telling the two boys information so they can make an informed decision because until that point in their lives they had probably only heard from people like you.
Many conceded, selfish , idiots join services like the Army because the requirements arent as harsh and they are greedy and just want college money.
I do not know one marine who didn’t join purely to help people, fellow marines and people from other countries. Also the “wonderful stories” of traveling that are criticized are quite possibly true. My cousin who has been in for 3 years has been to Japan, Iraq, and Hawaii.
Also you state “$1500″ as if it is nothing. In reality, when you are 18 and all of your housing, water, heat, and electric, and sometimes travel and food bills are paid for 1500 dollars of “spendin” money is alot. Basiclly you are 18 years old and have your own place and
$1500 a month of whatever you want, its like making 3-4k right off the bat. All I have paid for in the past year is car insurance, gas, cell phone, and some groceries.
Most kids I know who are 18-22 are fairly immature and if they are mature, they are having a hard time keeping up with their responsibilities in the current economy. The military gives many young Americans financial security and teaches responsibility.
Altogether the Military is a volunteer service that offers alot of great opportunities and benefits and I don’t think negative or pessimistic opinions should be spread around so easily without any firsthand experience.
Also…don’t make fun of veterans for losing their lives or limbs it shouldn’t be treated as a joke and all of those who have were doing it fully aware that was one of the risks of trying to help others.
Katie
It’s true that recruiters sugar coat stuff, it’s how they are rated by their supperiors. It’s true that they sometimes push kids a little. But what the hell, kids arent stupid. They will do their research, they aren’t just going to walk into a recuiters office and just sign up, based purely on what the recruiter said. And it’s their damn desicion to join, you can do NOTHING about it.
I would really ask for you to have a little respect for These men, recruiters, and troops of this nation. Those guys bust their asses out there. They are out there so our that flag can fly for all to see. Why would you be this way to people who fight for your freedom? The only reason your are here today, putting up these bull s*** articles is because brave men and women fought for this country so we could be free, and you use that freedom they fought for so wrong.
If I ever meet you in public, I would be cussing and yelling at you a lot. As much as i want to do it in public and in here, it would not be the right thing to do. Your entitled to my opinion and me to mine.
I really wish some of you liberals would vanish. You all are the reason countrys overseas call us an “arrogant and ugly nation”. If the whole world were marines, we would be living in a perfect world. I’m proud to be an American, I have freedom only others could wish for. You people embarass me, and this nation.
I’m going to pariss island to be made into a marine once i graduate highschool, and I’m damn exited for it. Im going to have a civilian counter part once im done in the marines, if i chose to leave at all I love this country, and anyone who wants to take the freedom away from it will have to put up a hell of a fight.
PS getting a college degree at 45 is the same exact thing as a college degree right after highschool. Getting a college degree at 45 + being a marine for over 20 years= golden for getting the job you want. College degree strait out of highschool + no years in the marines= maybe 20,000 dollars a year if your lucky, and good luck on trying to climb up the ladder. College does not make you a better person, your just better preprared for a career. Marines will make you the best you can ever be, and it will prepare you for any situation, hardship, or obstacle you may face.
PSS if you don’t want those kids at target to go to the marines so bad, why don’t you just go ahead and pay for their college education.
To all the normal Americans out there that have a brain and some sense,
OORAH AND SEMPER FI!!!
To Brendan/Dissapointed: As per the usual, you clearly did not read my related post about my brother (linked to at the top of this post.) I’m NOT attacking service members. I’m calling out the military on dishonest recruitment tactics.
What’s most “dissapointing” is your lack of proper spelling and grammatical skills. If you want to come on here and hurl insults at me, at least have the courtesy to run spell check. Perhaps you should spend more time in school learning these skills and less time planning your military career.
SNAP!
Yea, so maybe it went far to attack you about the service, or whatever that lame excuse up there was. But really? You bother me about my spell check, not even trying to defend your point of ‘dishonest recruiting techniques’. Real smart.
And no, I didn’t run spell check, so who cares? You clearly understood all my insults, so there’s no problem! All my points got across.
And why should I bother worrying about my spelling on a lame ass blog some lonely lady like you put up? The only reason I am on this is because I am outraged with people like you, and I have to defend one of the major things that made this country great: our ass kicking military.
PS dumb ass: if we lived in a world where recruiters sugar coated nothing, just the cold hard facts, not so many people would join. That would = small and weak military. Small weak military = easy target for other nations who want our resources, or just our land. Easy target for other nations = us being taken over by foreign people, which = no liberty, and possibly = no America, and you and me dead.
And if your going to try to hurl a comeback at me, try to address all my other arguments, not just my “spelling problem”
And, OH SNAP! the 90s just called they want their comeback back
That’s all folks. I’m closing comments on this one.
